Older houses, newer heating

What we do

Two kinds of building, one set of instruments

A hundred-year-old house in Fairhaven and a tenanted unit on Meridian have very little in common except that both need someone to measure before recommending anything.

Oil heat

Repair it, replace it, or change fuel?

Plenty of Whatcom County houses still run on oil, and the decision about what to do next is rarely urgent until the day the boiler or furnace stops. Then it is made in a hurry, usually badly.

The planner walks through age, tank condition, ductwork and how long you plan to stay, and lays out the three honest routes with what each one actually involves.

How we work

Four steps, no surprises

  1. Look at what is thereIncluding the parts previous work left behind, which in old houses is most of the story.
  2. MeasureTemperatures, pressures, airflow, combustion where it applies.
  3. Explain the optionsUsually more than one, with the cost and the downside of each stated.
  4. Write it downPrices in writing, and the commissioning figures left with you when we finish.

Questions

Before you call

We still have oil heat. Should we change?

Not necessarily, and not urgently. It depends on the age of the equipment, the tank, whether the house has usable ducts and how long you plan to stay. Our oil heat planner walks through those four and sets out the honest routes.

Do heat pumps work through a Bellingham winter?

Yes, when they are specified for it. The detail that matters is how the backup heat is configured — it should be a safety net rather than the thing doing the daily work.

How much would we save by switching fuel?

We will not print a figure. Fuel prices move, houses differ and habits matter. We will work it through with your own bills and let you decide.

Our bathroom fan runs but the room stays damp. Why?

Usually the duct rather than the fan — sagging, disconnected in the loft, or too long and too narrow. We measure what the fan actually moves before recommending anything.

Do you work on commercial buildings?

Yes — shops, cafés, offices, studios, clinics and light industrial units, with maintenance recorded per unit.

Which areas do you cover?

Bellingham, Ferndale, Lynden, Blaine, Everson and Birch Bay.
